KCRA: Interview with Attorney General Rob Bonta on Gun Safety

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

After a federal appeals court struck down a law that kept people with domestic violence restraining orders from having guns on Thursday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state’s department of justice is ready for conservative-leaning judges to rule similarly in separate cases challenging some of California’s gun laws.

“Their legal analysis is poor, their conclusions are misguided and their outcomes are dangerous and that is a problem,” Bonta told KCRA 3 on Friday on the federal court ruling.

Bonta reiterated the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling does not apply to California. The state would be affected if the United States Supreme Court weighs in and sides with the court on the issue.

In response to Thursday’s ruling, Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “We are probably only weeks away from another activist judge, Judge Roger Benitez, striking down California’s bans on assault weapons and large capacity magazines.”

Bonta had more thoughts about the ruling.

“Are we prepared for a case to be brought to go in front of one of those judges and to have an outcome similar to what we’ve seen in the past? We have to be ready for that,” Bonta said. “We have some of the best attorneys in the country and the world and we’re going to do our best anytime we go into court to make the best, most sound arguments about constitutional compliance and common-sense laws we have to keep people safe here in California.”
